Mula Bandha
“Root lock”. Contraction of the perineum and pelvic floor muscles that seals the base of the torso and directs the descending energy (apāna) upward.
Technique according to the HYP (3.60):
“Pressing the perineum with the heel, contracting the anus, and drawing apāna upward — this is called Mūla Bandha.”
Effects:
- Unites prāṇa (ascending) with apāna (descending)
- Stimulates mūlādhāra chakra
- Ignites the “inner fire” when prāṇa and apāna meet
- Prepares for the awakening of kuṇḍalinī
It is practiced during kumbhaka and in many āsanas. It is one of the three main bandhas along with uḍḍiyāna and jālandhara.
