Vibhūti Pāda · Sutra 34

हृदये चित्तसंवित्

hṛdaye cittasaṃvit

From saṃyama on the heart arises knowledge of the mind.

Hṛdaya is the heart. Citta is the mind. Saṃvit is complete knowledge.

The heart, in the yogic tradition, is the seat of individual consciousness. Not just the physical organ but the spiritual center.

Through saṃyama on this center, the yogī knows the nature of mind completely: its structure, its functions, its contents.

This knowledge includes hidden saṃskāras, unconscious motivations, deep patterns.

It is radical self-knowledge. Not superficial introspection but direct penetration into the mystery of one’s own mind.

The Upaniṣads describe a small space in the heart (dahara ākāśa) where the Self resides. Saṃyama here reveals both container and content.

The heart is also where the three guṇas unite. To know it is to know how they combine to produce experience.

From this knowledge arises mastery over one’s own mind.
