Vibhūti Pāda · Sutra 52

क्षणतत्क्रमयोः संयमाद्विवेकजं ज्ञानम्

kṣaṇa-tat-kramayoḥ saṃyamāt viveka-jaṃ jñānam

From saṃyama on the moment and its succession arises knowledge born of discernment.

Kṣaṇa is moment, instant. Krama is succession. Viveka is discernment. Ja means born of. Jñāna is knowledge.

Time seems continuous but is composed of discrete moments, like a film of successive frames.

Through saṃyama on the moment (the indivisible unit of time) and its succession (how one moment follows another), vivekaja jñāna arises: knowledge born of discernment.

This knowledge discerns the real from the unreal, the permanent from the transient, puruṣa from prakṛti.

To understand time is to understand change. To understand change is to see that everything manifested is impermanent. The only permanent thing is the witness.

This saṃyama leads directly to the ultimate discrimination: seeing that the Self is not in time, does not change, does not follow sequences.

It is direct preparation for kaivalya.
