"न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः | अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे"

"na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ | ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre"

It is not born nor does it die at any time; having existed, it does not cease to exist again. It is unborn, eternal, perpetual, primordial. It is not killed when the body is killed

The complete definition of the ātman in four negations and four attributes. Negations: na jāyate (not born), na mriyate (does not die), na bhūtvā bhavitā (does not exist-having-existed), na bhūyaḥ (will not cease). The ātman is without temporal beginning or end.

Attributes: aja (unborn), nitya (eternal), śāśvata (perpetual), purāṇa (ancient, primordial). Each term adds nuance: aja denies origin; nitya affirms persistence; śāśvata connotes immutability; purāṇa indicates temporal primacy.

The synthesis: when hanyamāne śarīre (the body is killed), na hanyate (this is not killed). The body is vehicle, not essence.
