Vibhūti Pāda · Sutra 39

उदानजयाज्जलपङ्ककण्टकादिष्वसङ्ग उत्क्रान्तिश्च

udāna-jayāt jala-paṅka-kaṇṭaka-ādiṣu asaṅgaḥ utkrāntiś ca

From mastery of udāna arises non-adhesion to water, mud, thorns, and the like, and ascension.

Udāna is the ascending prāṇa. Jaya is mastery. Jala is water. Paṅka is mud. Kaṇṭaka are thorns. Asaṅga is non-contact. Utkrānti is elevation, ascent.

Udāna is one of the five divisions of prāṇa, responsible for upward movement. It governs the region from the throat upward.

Mastering udāna, the yogī can levitate, walk on water, pass through mud without sinking, move among thorns without being harmed.

Utkrānti also means the exit from the body at the moment of death. Mastering udāna, the yogī can consciously choose the moment and manner of departure.

It is the power to transcend gravity, both physical and karmic. What pulls downward ceases to have effect.

Haṭha yogīs practice specific techniques to master udāna: viparīta karaṇī, jālandhara bandha, ujjāyī.

This siddhi illustrates how mastery of subtle energy affects the physical body and its apparent limitations.
