Vibhūti Pāda · Sutra 40

समानजयाज्ज्वलनम्

samānajayājjvalanam

From mastery of samāna arises radiance.

Samāna is the equalizing prāṇa. Jaya is mastery. Jvalana is brightness, radiance, fire.

Samāna operates in the navel region, balancing prāṇa and apāna. It governs digestion and assimilation.

Mastering samāna, the yogī’s body shines. It is a literal radiance: the body radiates light.

This brightness is the inner fire (agni) manifesting externally. Perfect digestion produces perfect tissues; perfect tissues radiate.

Some interpret this as the visible aura. Others as the luminosity of the skin observed in great masters.

Samāna also balances the opposing energies of the body. Its mastery produces total harmony.

Radiance is not only physical. It is also the brightness of presence, that luminous quality that realized beings have.

In terms of haṭha yoga, practices like agnisar kriyā and nauli strengthen samāna.

The radiant yogī needs no words to transmit their state: their light speaks.
