From saṃyama on the relationship between the ear and space arises divine hearing.

Śrotra is the ear. Ākāśa is space, ether. Sambandha is relationship. Divya is divine, celestial.

The ear perceives sound; sound travels through space. By meditating on this connection, the yogī develops clairaudience.

Divine hearing (divya śrotra) allows hearing what is beyond normal range: distant sounds, faraway conversations, the subtle frequencies that animate creation.

Ākāśa is not only physical space but the subtle element that pervades everything. It is the medium of propagation for all vibrations.

By understanding the intimate relationship between the sense and its medium, the yogī can expand the range of the sense.

It is like tuning a radio to frequencies it couldn’t receive before. The waves were always there; what changes is the capacity to receive.

Mystics of all traditions report hearing the “music of the spheres” or the primordial sound (nāda, Oṃ).
