Vibhūti Pāda · Sutra 55

सत्त्वपुरुषयोः शुद्धिसाम्ये कैवल्यम्

sattvapuruṣayoḥ śuddhisāmye kaivalyam

When the purity of sattva equals that of puruṣa, kaivalya arises.

Sattva is the mind in its purest aspect. Puruṣa is the Self. Śuddhi is purity. Sāmya is equality. Kaivalya is liberation, isolation.

This sutra closes the Vibhūti Pāda with the final goal.

Sattva, however pure, always had a subtle veil of impurity: identification with prakṛti. Puruṣa, on the other hand, is absolute purity by nature.

When sattva is completely purified, when no trace of rajas or tamas remains, when the erroneous identification ceases, then sattva perfectly reflects puruṣa.

In that moment of perfect equality, kaivalya arises: puruṣa recognizes itself as it always was—free, alone, complete.

Kaivalya is not something gained nor a state achieved. It is the recognition of what was always there.

The siddhis were signs along the way. This is the destination. The fourth Pāda, Kaivalya Pāda, will explore this state in detail.

Thus concludes the book of powers, pointing beyond all power toward supreme freedom.
