त्याग
Tyaga
conceptoRenunciation, abandonment, surrender. From the root tyaj — to leave, to relinquish. One of the central virtues in the Bhagavad-gītā’s ethical teaching.
Kṛṣṇa distinguishes three types of tyāga in Chapter 18: renunciation of actions based on aversion (sāttvika), renunciation from fear or personal suffering (rājasika), and renunciation from delusion or ignorance (tāmasika). True tyāga is sāttvika — performed with understanding and without attachment to results.
Unlike mere ascetic withdrawal, tyāga in the Gītā is inner abandonment of attachment while maintaining engagement in action. It is the relinquishment of the fruit of action, not action itself.
