This should not be said to one who does not practice austerity, nor to the non-devotee, nor to the one undesirous of hearing, nor to one who envies Me.

Restrictions on transmission. Sacred knowledge requires receptivity. Not for:

• Atapaskāya — one who lacks tapas (discipline, austerity)
• Abhaktāya — without devotion, only dry intellectualism
• Aśuśrūṣave — undesirous of serving/hearing
• Yaḥ mām abhyasūyati — one who envies/hates the Divine

The guru must discern the disciple (śiṣya).
