Prakaraṇa 2 · Verse 3
यथा रज्जुः सर्पीभूत्वा भ्रान्त्या चलति मानुसे
yathā rajjuḥ sarpībhūtvā bhrāntyā calati mānuse
As a rope appears as a snake through error and moves in the mind
The classic analogy of the rope and the snake — rajjusarpa — appears in every Advaita text from Śaṅkara onward. But Vasiṣṭha extends it: the snake not only appears, it “moves in the mind.” Error (bhrānti) is not passive misperception; it actively generates the appearance of motion, life, threat. The fear you feel when you see the snake is real — your heartbeat accelerates, adrenaline floods your system. The error has real consequences while it lasts. This is the crux: appearance is not “nothing.” It is a functional reality that dissolves upon examination.
