Prakaraṇa 2 · Verse 5
प्रतिबिम्ब इव बिम्बम् भाति विश्वमिदं जगत्
pratibimba iva bimbam bhāti viśvamidaṃ jagat
Like a reflection, the image shines — this entire world
Pratibimba — reflection — is the complement of bimba — original image. The relationship is not one of illusion but of dependence: the reflection depends on the original, the original does not depend on the reflection. The world depends on consciousness for its appearance; consciousness does not depend on the world for its existence. Break the mirror and the reflection ceases, but the face it reflected is unchanged. Vasiṣṭha does not say the mirror is unreal — he says you are the face, not the reflection.
