सहस्र
Sahasra
conceptoSahasra (सहस्र) means thousand and functions in the yogic tradition as a symbol of infinitude and completeness. The sahasrāra-cakra, the thousand-petaled lotus at the crown of the head, represents the culmination of the kuṇḍalinī ascent and union with the absolute. The Upaniṣads employ sahasra to indicate the innumerable — as in “sahasra-śīrṣā puruṣaḥ,” the Puruṣa of a thousand heads. The Haṭha-pradīpikā and the Śiva-saṃhitā describe the sahasrāra as the final abode of Śiva. See chakra, kundalini.
