Without expectation, without modification, without burden, with a serene mind — such is the sage. There is nothing to accept and nothing to reject. Be aware of this and be free. In Chapter 13 the context is happiness. This description shows that happiness is not a state opposite to sorrow but the absence of both. Acceptance and rejection are movements of the mind; the sākṣī does not move. The sage’s serenity is like the sky: clouds pass, the sky remains.
