Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga · Verse 29
"सीदन्ति मम गात्राणि मुखं च परिशुष्यति | वेपथुश्च शरीरे मे रोमहर्षश्च जायते"
"sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṃ ca pariśuṣyati | vepathuś ca śarīre me roma-harṣaś ca jāyate"
My limbs collapse, my mouth becomes completely dry, trembling there is in my body, and my hair stands on end
The somatic symptoms of viṣāda (despair) are precise: sīdanti (sink, decay, lose strength) describes muscular flaccidity; pariśuṣyati (dries completely) is the cessation of secretions; vepathuḥ (trembling) affects the motor system; roma-harṣaḥ (horripilation, erection of hair) is an autonomic response to extreme stress.
This is ancient medical literature. Each symptom corresponds to activation of the sympathetic nervous system — Arjuna’s body responds to psychic trauma with preparation for flight or paralysis, not for combat.
The ca (and) that connects the lines creates a rhythm of accumulation: the whole body is in rebellion against the violence that the mind tries to rationalize.
