सांख्ययोग Sāṅkhya Yoga · Verse 54

अर्जुन उवाच | स्थितप्रज्ञस्य का भाषा समाधिस्थस्य केशव | स्थितधीः किं प्रभाषेत किमासीत व्रजेत किम्

arjuna uvāca | sthita-prajñasya kā bhāṣā samādhi-sthasya keśava | sthita-dhīḥ kiṃ prabhāṣeta kim āsīta vrajeta kim

Arjuna said: What are the signs of one established in wisdom, of one in samādhi, O Keśava? How does the one of steady mind speak, how does he sit, how does he walk?

Arjuna formulates a crucial practical question: how do you recognize someone who has attained the state described by Kṛṣṇa?

Sthita-prajña — established in wisdom, with stable knowledge. Not intellectual wisdom but living, embodied knowledge.

Samādhi-stha — established in samādhi. Meditative absorption not as a passing experience but as a permanent state.

Sthita-dhī — stable mind, firm intellect.

Arjuna asks about observable external signs:

  • Kiṃ prabhāṣeta — how does he speak?
  • Kim āsīta — how does he sit?
  • Vrajeta kim — how does he walk?

The question recognizes that realization manifests in the ordinary: speech, posture, movement. It doesn’t seek supernatural signs but characteristics of daily life.

The following verses (55-72) constitute the famous description of the sthita-prajña.
