अथ सिद्धासनम् | योनिस्थानकमङ्घ्रिमूलघटितं कृत्वा दृढं विन्यसेत्

atha siddhāsanam | yoni-sthānakam aṅghri-mūla-ghaṭitaṃ kṛtvā dṛḍhaṃ vinyaset

Now, Siddhāsana: press the heel firmly against the perineum (yoni-sthāna).

The technical description of Siddhāsana begins. The first step is fundamental: the heel (usually the left) must press firmly against the yoni-sthāna or perineum.

Yoni-sthāna literally means “place of origin” and refers to the point between the anus and the genitals. This point corresponds approximately to the physical location of Mūlādhāra chakra. The pressure of the heel here naturally activates Mūla bandha, the root lock.

Dṛḍham — “firmly” — indicates that this is not light pressure but constant and sustained. This pressure creates a continuous stimulus that keeps the energy active at the base of the spine, preparing it for ascent.

For men, the heel presses just behind the scrotum. For women, the position is anatomically adjusted, pressing the area of the clitoris or just above it.
