Historical context
The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā was composed around 1450 in northern India. Its author, Svātmārāma, was a yogi of the Nath tradition, a lineage of ascetics who developed Haṭha Yoga as a codified system.
The text represents a synthesis: Svātmārāma compiled teachings from earlier texts and oral traditions, organizing them into a coherent and accessible system. He cites multiple earlier masters, from Matsyendranāth and Gorakṣanāth to lesser-known figures of the lineage.
Purpose of the text
Svātmārāma presents Haṭha Yoga as a ladder to Rāja Yoga — the physical and energetic practices prepare the body-mind for meditation and samādhi. This vision reconciles two traditions: Patañjali's yoga (centered on the mind) and Haṭha Yoga (centered on the body and energy).
The ultimate goal is to awaken kuṇḍalinī, the dormant energy at the base of the spine, and guide it upward until achieving the union of solar and lunar polarities: the esoteric meaning of haṭha (ha = sun, ṭha = moon).
