Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 6

भ्रान्त्या बहुमत-ध्वान्ते राज-योगम् अजानताम् | हठ-प्रदीपिकां धत्ते स्वात्मारामः कृपाकरः

bhrāntyā bahumata-dhvānte rāja-yogam ajānatām | haṭha-pradīpikāṃ dhatte svātmārāmaḥ kṛpākaraḥ

For those who do not know Raja Yoga and wander in the darkness of multiple doctrines, the compassionate Svātmārāma offers this lamp of Haṭha.

This verse explains the purpose of the text: to illuminate the path for those confused by the multiplicity of teachings. The word pradīpikā means “small lamp” — a modest but sufficient guide to dispel darkness.

Confusion (bhrānti) before “multiple doctrines” (bahumata) is a perennial problem. Today we face the same proliferation of styles, methods, and “new yogas.” Svātmārāma offers clarity: Haṭha Yoga is a proven path to Raja Yoga, the mastery of the mind.

The compassion (kṛpā) of the master is what motivates transmission. He does not write to show off but to serve.
