Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 4
मत्स्येन्द्र-गोरक्ष-आदयो विज्ञाय हठ-विद्याम् | स्वात्मारामोऽथवा योगी विद्यते तत्-प्रसादतः
matsyendra-gorakṣa-ādayo vijñāya haṭha-vidyām | svātmārāmo'thavā yogī vidyate tat-prasādataḥ
Through the grace of gurus like Matsyendra, Gorakṣa and others, who knew the science of Haṭha Yoga, the yogī Svātmārāma learned this vidyā.
This verse establishes the paramparā (lineage) of the author. Matsyendranātha is considered the human founder of the Nātha tradition. According to legend, he received the teachings from Śiva while in the belly of a fish (matsya).
Gorakṣanātha (Gorakh) was his principal disciple and systematizer of Haṭha Yoga. Numerous texts are attributed to him, as well as the expansion of the Nātha order throughout India.
The author names himself Svātmārāma, “one who delights in his own Self” (sva + ātmā + rāma), perhaps indicating a state of realization or simply an adopted spiritual name.
The word prasādataḥ (by grace) emphasizes that yogic knowledge is transmitted not only through instruction but through the blessing of the guru.
