Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 5
मत्स्येन्द्र-गोरक्ष-आदयो विज्ञाता हठ-योगिनः | स्वात्मारामोऽथवा योगी जानीते तत्-प्रसादतः
matsyendra-gorakṣa-ādayo vijñātā haṭha-yoginaḥ | svātmārāmo'thavā yogī jānīte tat-prasādataḥ
Matsyendra, Gorakṣa and others knew Haṭha Yoga. By their grace, the yogī Svātmārāma also knows it.
Svātmārāma establishes his spiritual lineage. Matsyendranātha and Gorakṣanātha are the founding fathers of the Nātha tradition, the yogīs who systematized Haṭha Yoga.
The word prasādataḥ (by their grace) indicates that yogic knowledge is not acquired through intellectual effort alone but flows through the master-disciple transmission (guru-śiṣya-paramparā).
The author names himself as Svātmārāma, “one who delights in his own Self” — a name that reveals the fruit of Haṭha Yoga: rest in one’s essential nature.
