Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 46
मन्दाग्निसन्दीपनपाचनादिसन्धापिकानन्दकरी सदैव | अशेषदोषामयशोषणी च हठक्रियामौलिरियं च नौलिः
mandāgnisandīpanapācanādisandhāpikānandakarī sadaiva | aśeṣadoṣāmayaśoṣaṇī ca haṭhakriyāmaulir iyaṃ ca nauliḥ
Nauli kindles the weak digestive fire, stimulates digestion, always produces happiness, dries up all doṣas and diseases. It is the crowning practice of haṭha.
This verse exalts nauli above all other haṭha yoga practices. It is called haṭhakriyāmauli — “the crown of haṭha practices,” indicating its supremacy among the ṣaṭkarmas.
The benefits are extensive: mandāgnisandīpana (kindling the weak digestive fire), pācana (promoting digestion of food and toxins), and ānandakarī (producing happiness). This last benefit is explained because nauli directly massages the solar plexus, the seat of emotions and the second largest concentration of neurons outside the brain.
Aśeṣadoṣāmayaśoṣaṇī means that it “completely dries up all doṣas and diseases.” The action of internally massaging the abdominal organs stimulates circulation, eliminates stagnation, and optimizes the function of the entire digestive system.
