Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 54
कपालशोधनं वातदोषघ्नं कृमिदोषहृत् | पुनः पुनरिदं कार्यं सूर्यभेदनमुत्तमम्
kapālaśodhanaṃ vātadoṣaghnaṃ kṛmidoṣahṛt | punaḥ punar idaṃ kāryaṃ sūryabhedanam uttamam
It purifies the skull, destroys vāta disorders, and eliminates parasites. This excellent sūryabheda should be practiced again and again.
This verse enumerates the benefits of sūryabheda. Kapālaśodhana (purification of the skull) indicates that the frontal sinuses and brain are cleansed and energized. The heat generated by the activation of piṅgalā dries mucus and stimulates cerebral circulation.
Vātadoṣaghna means that it destroys vāta (air) disorders. This may seem paradoxical since prāṇāyāma works with air, but the solar heat balances the cold and irregularity associated with imbalanced vāta.
Kṛmidoṣahṛt — “eliminates parasites” — reflects the traditional understanding that internal heat destroys pathogenic organisms. The instruction punaḥ punaḥ (again and again) emphasizes the need for repeated practice to obtain these benefits.
