Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 64

एकं सिद्धासनं चैव द्वितीयं कमलासनम् | तृतीयं गोमुखं प्रोक्तं चतुर्थं वीरासनम्

ekaṃ siddhāsanaṃ caiva dvitīyaṃ kamalāsanam | tṛtīyaṃ gomukhaṃ proktaṃ caturthaṃ vīrāsanam

The first is Siddhāsana, the second Kamalāsana (Padmāsana), the third Gomukhāsana, and the fourth Vīrāsana.

This verse presents an alternative list of four essential postures, different from the one mentioned earlier:

  1. Siddhāsana — Constant in both lists, confirming its supremacy
  2. Kamalāsana — Synonym for Padmāsana (kamala = lotus)
  3. Gomukhāsana — “Cow-face posture,” new in this list
  4. Vīrāsana — “Hero posture,” replacing Bhadrāsana

This variation reflects different traditions within Haṭha Yoga. Texts frequently present alternative lists, not due to inconsistency but by recognizing that different practitioners need different emphases.

Gomukhāsana and Vīrāsana are seated postures that offer specific benefits for hips and knees. Their inclusion suggests the author considers these variations important to complete the basic repertoire.

The existence of multiple lists of “essential postures” indicates that the concept of “essential” is flexible. What matters is having a manageable set of postures that covers fundamental needs.
