Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 10

हिक्का श्वासश्च कासश्च शिरः-कर्णाक्षि-वेदनाः | भवन्ति विविधाः रोगाः पवनस्य प्रकोपतः

hikkā śvāsaś ca kāsaś ca śiraḥ-karṇākṣi-vedanāḥ | bhavanti vividhāḥ rogāḥ pavanasya prakopataḥ

Hiccups, asthma, cough, headache, ear pain, and eye pain — these and other various diseases arise from disturbance of the wind.

This verse details the specific symptoms that can arise from incorrect prāṇāyāma practice (pavanasya prakopataḥ — disturbance of the wind/prāṇa):

  • Hikkā — hiccups, diaphragm spasms
  • Śvāsa — breathing difficulty, asthma
  • Kāsa — cough
  • Śiraḥ-vedanā — headache
  • Karṇa-vedanā — ear pain
  • Akṣi-vedanā — eye pain

And vividhāḥ rogāḥ — “various diseases” more.

The list is significant because all these symptoms are related to pressure, tension, and imbalance in the head, chest, and nervous system regions — exactly the areas affected by forced breath retentions.

If any of these symptoms appear during or after practice, it is a signal to adjust technique, reduce intensity, or consult with an experienced teacher.
