Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 15
अत्याहारः प्रयासश्च प्रजल्पो नियमाग्रहः | जन-सङ्गश्च लौल्यं च षड्भिर्योगो विनश्यति
atyāhāraḥ prayāsaśca prajalpo niyamāgrahaḥ | jana-saṅgaśca laulyaṃ ca ṣaḍbhir yogo vinaśyati
Yoga is destroyed by these six causes: overeating, excessive effort, talking too much, rigid adherence to rules, company of worldly people, and inconstancy.
This verse enumerates the six obstacles (ṣaḍ-doṣa) that destroy progress in yoga:
-
Atyāhāra — Overeating. Digestion consumes energy that could be used for practice.
-
Prayāsa — Excessive effort. Practice should be steady but not forced.
-
Prajalpa — Talking too much. Speech disperses prāṇa and agitates the mind.
-
Niyamāgraha — Rigid adherence to external rules. Obsession with external rituals without inner understanding.
-
Jana-saṅga — Worldly company. Relationships with people not interested in the spiritual path can divert us.
-
Laulya — Inconstancy or restlessness. Practice requires regularity and commitment.
These obstacles are as relevant today as they were six centuries ago.
