Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 17

अत्याहारः प्रयासश्च प्रजल्पो नियमाग्रहः | जन-सङ्गश्च लौल्यं च षड्भिर्योगो विनश्यति

atyāhāraḥ prayāsaś ca prajalpo niyamāgrahaḥ | jana-saṅgaś ca laulyaṃ ca ṣaḍbhir yogo vinaśyati

Yoga is destroyed by six causes: overeating, excessive effort, talking too much, rigid adherence to rules, excessive company, and restlessness.

This verse enumerates the six obstacles (ṣaṭ-karma-nāśaka) to the practice of yoga:

  1. Atyāhāra — Overeating. Overfeeding dulls the mind and overloads the body.

  2. Prayāsa — Excessive effort. Includes both exhausting physical work and excessive ambition.

  3. Prajalpa — Talking too much. Unnecessary chatter dissipates energy and disturbs the mind.

  4. Niyamāgraha — Rigid adherence to rules. Paradoxically, excessive attachment to norms and rituals can become an obstacle.

  5. Jana-saṅga — Company of many people. Excessive socialization distracts from the necessary internalization.

  6. Laulya — Restlessness, inconstancy. The mind that jumps from one object to another cannot deepen.

This verse is remarkably balanced: it warns against both excess of indulgence and excess of rigidity.
