Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 18

उत्साहात्साहसाद्धैर्यात्तत्त्व-ज्ञानाच्च निश्चयात् | जन-सङ्ग-परित्यागात्षड्भिर्योगः प्रसिध्यति

utsāhāt sāhasād dhairyāt tattva-jñānāc ca niścayāt | jana-saṅga-parityāgāt ṣaḍbhir yogaḥ prasidhyati

Yoga succeeds through six qualities: enthusiasm, courage, perseverance, knowledge of truth, determination, and renunciation of excessive company.

Complementing the previous verse on obstacles, Svātmārāma enumerates the six qualities that lead to success:

  1. Utsāha — Enthusiasm. The genuine impulse and joy in practice, not forced but natural.

  2. Sāhasa — Courage, audacity. The willingness to face the unknown and overcome one’s limits.

  3. Dhairya — Perseverance, patience. The capacity to continue despite difficulties and lack of immediate results.

  4. Tattva-jñāna — Knowledge of truth. Correct understanding of the principles of yoga, not blind practice.

  5. Niścaya — Firm determination. Unwavering conviction in the chosen path.

  6. Jana-saṅga-parityāga — Renunciation of excessive company. Time alone for internalization.

These verses 17-18 form a complementary pair that balances warning (what destroys) with positive guidance (what to cultivate).
