In a well-governed kingdom, in a virtuous place, with abundance of food, free from disturbances, with space of one bow’s length, without rocks, fire, or water…

This verse (which continues in 1.09) describes the ideal conditions for establishing a maṭha (practice hermitage). Dhanuḥ-pramāṇa indicates a space of approximately two meters — sufficient to practice āsanas.

The conditions reflect common sense: a peaceful place (nirupadrave), without climatic extremes or natural dangers, in a stable society that respects spiritual life.

For the modern practitioner, the principle translates thus: create a space dedicated to your practice, free from interruptions, with minimum conditions of comfort. You don’t need a palace, but you do need a protected corner.

The abundance of food (subhikṣe) indicates that yoga is not practiced in destitution. Basic needs must be met so the mind can turn inward.
