Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 16

उत्साहात्साहसाद्धैर्यात्तत्त्व-ज्ञानाच्च निश्चयात् | जन-सङ्ग-परित्यागात्षड्भिर्योगः प्रसिद्ध्यति

utsāhāt sāhasād dhairyāt tattva-jñānāc ca niścayāt | jana-saṅga-parityāgāt ṣaḍbhir yogaḥ prasiddhyati

Yoga is perfected by these six qualities: enthusiasm, audacity, perseverance, discriminative knowledge, firm faith, and withdrawal from worldly company.

This verse complements the previous one, presenting the six qualities (ṣaḍ-guṇa) that lead to success:

  1. Utsāha — Enthusiasm. The positive energy that drives practice.

  2. Sāhasa — Audacity or courage. The willingness to face the unknown in practice.

  3. Dhairya — Perseverance or patience. Continuing despite obstacles.

  4. Tattva-jñāna — Knowledge of fundamental principles. Understanding what you are doing and why.

  5. Niścaya — Firm faith or determination. Unshakeable confidence in the path.

  6. Jana-saṅga-parityāga — Renunciation of worldly company. Seeking satsaṅga (company of seekers).

Note that the last point appears in both lists: the company we choose profoundly influences our practice.
