Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 11

युक्तं युक्तं त्यजेद्वायुं युक्तं युक्तं च पूरयेत् | युक्तं युक्तं च बध्नीयादेवं सिद्धिमवाप्नुयात्

yuktaṃ yuktaṃ tyajed vāyuṃ yuktaṃ yuktaṃ ca pūrayet | yuktaṃ yuktaṃ ca badhnīyād evaṃ siddhim avāpnuyāt

Exhale moderately, inhale moderately, retain moderately — thus success is obtained.

The repetition of yuktaṃ yuktaṃ (moderate, appropriate, balanced) six times in a single verse is emphatic: moderation is the guiding principle.

The three phases of prāṇāyāma:

  • Tyajet (exhale) — recaka
  • Pūrayet (inhale) — pūraka
  • Badhnīyāt (retain) — kumbhaka

Each must be done yuktam — in a balanced manner, without forcing.

Siddhi (success, attainment) comes not from extreme intensity but from moderate consistency. This principle contradicts the mentality of “more is better” or “no pain, no gain.”

In practical terms:

  • Don’t inhale to the absolute limit
  • Don’t exhale to the last trace of air
  • Don’t retain until seeing stars

Correct practice feels comfortable, sustainable, and allows gradual progression over months and years.
