Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 67

तथैव स्वशरीरस्थं चालयेत्पवनं धिया | यदा श्रमो भवेद्देहे तदा सूर्येण पूरयेत्

tathaiva svaśarīrasthaṃ cālayet pavanaṃ dhiyā | yadā śramo bhaved dehe tadā sūryeṇa pūrayet

In the same way, one should move the air in one’s own body with awareness. When fatigue arises in the body, then one should inhale through the solar channel.

This verse adds an important instruction about regulating bhastrikā. The movement of air must be done dhiyā — “with awareness” or “with intelligence.” Bhastrikā is not merely mechanical; it requires full attention to bodily sensations.

Yadā śramo bhaved dehe — “when fatigue arises in the body” — indicates the moment of transition. The vigorous rounds of rapid breathing eventually produce tiredness. When this occurs, the practitioner should switch to a deep inhalation through sūrya (piṅgalā/right).

This inhalation through the solar channel re-energizes the system. The heat and vitality of piṅgalā counteract the fatigue. This is the beginning of the kumbhaka phase that concludes the round of bhastrikā. The alternation between vigorous activity and deep retention is the complete pattern of this powerful practice.
