Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 66

प्राणायामेन युक्तेन सर्वरोगक्षयो भवेत् | अयुक्ताभ्यासयोगेन सर्वरोगसमुद्गमः

prāṇāyāmena yuktena sarva-roga-kṣayo bhavet | ayuktābhyāsa-yogena sarva-roga-samudgamaḥ

With prāṇāyāma practiced correctly, all diseases are destroyed. With incorrect practice, all diseases arise.

This verse is a crucial warning that serves as a transition toward the second chapter on prāṇāyāma. It establishes the principle that yogic techniques are powerful in both directions.

Yuktena — “correctly” or “appropriately.” Correct practice implies:

  • Instruction from a qualified teacher
  • Gradual and systematic progression
  • Attention to the body’s signals
  • Respect for prescribed proportions and timings

Ayuktābhyāsa — “incorrect practice.” Errors may include:

  • Forcing beyond current capacity
  • Excessively long retentions without preparation
  • Ignoring contraindications
  • Practicing with ego or haste

Sarva-roga-samudgamaḥ — “all diseases arise.” This is not rhetorical exaggeration. Incorrect prāṇāyāma can cause:

  • Nervous imbalances
  • Heart problems
  • Mental disorders
  • Lung damage

This verse is a reminder that Haṭha Yoga requires seriousness, patience, and proper guidance.
