Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 51

आसनं कुम्भकं चित्रं मुद्राख्यं करणं तथा | अथ नादानुसन्धानमभ्यासानुक्रमो हठे

āsanaṃ kumbhakaṃ citraṃ mudrākhyaṃ karaṇaṃ tathā | atha nādānusandhānam abhyāsānukramo haṭhe

Āsana, kumbhaka, the various practices called mudrās, and then absorption in nāda — this is the order of practice in haṭha yoga.

A structural verse that summarizes the entire system of the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā in sequence:

  1. Āsana — Chapter 1. Postures that purify and stabilize the body.

  2. Kumbhaka — Chapter 2. Prāṇāyāma with emphasis on breath retention.

  3. Mudrā — Chapter 3. Energetic seals that awaken kuṇḍalinī.

  4. Nādānusandhāna — Chapter 4. Absorption in the inner sound, leading to samādhi.

Abhyāsānukrama — the sequential order of practice. It is not arbitrary: each stage prepares for the next.

  • Without stable āsana, kumbhaka is impossible
  • Without mastered kumbhaka, mudrās don’t work
  • Without mudrās, the inner nāda is not heard

This verse functions as an index to the text and as a reminder that haṭha yoga is an integrated system, not a random collection of techniques.
