Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 14
ततः शनैः शनैरेव रेचयेन्न वेगतः | महामुद्रां च तेनैव वदन्ति विबुधोत्तमाः
tataḥ śanaiḥ śanair eva recayen na vegataḥ | mahāmudrāṃ ca tenaiva vadanti vibudhottamāḥ
Then you exhale very slowly, never quickly;this is what the best among the sages call Mahāmudrā.
Śanaiḥ śanaiḥ — very slowly — emphasizes the importance of controlled and gradual exhalation.The repetition of the term emphasizes that there should be no rush.Na vegataḥ — never with speed — warns against abrupt exhalation.
Slow exhalation allows the effects of the practice to integrate smoothly.A sudden release of air could disperse the accumulated prāṇa and disturb the nervous system.The transition must be as gradual as the awakening of the energy itself.
Vibudhottamāḥ — the best among the sages — validates this technique as accepted by the highest masters.Mahāmudrā, the “great seal”, so called because it seals the prāṇa within the system and seals consciousness in higher states.
