सर्वे नादा-नुसन्धाने लयं यान्ति मनोन्मनौ | तत्र वेदे-तरे वार्ता चेतश् चेतयति क्व वा
sarve nādānusandhāne layaṃ yānti manonmanau | tatra vedētare vārtā cetaś cetayati kva vā
In the investigation of nāda, everyone dissolves into the mindless state.There, what is the use of discussing the Vedas or other things?Where is the mind that knows?
This verse celebrates the superiority of direct experience:
Nādānusandhāne — in the investigation of nāda.Anusandhāna implies systematic search, persistent following of the internal sound.
Sarve layaṃ yānti — all dissolve.Not just thoughts but all distinctions: subject-object, internal-external, knower-known.
Manonmanau — in the mindless state or beyond the mind.The destiny of the practice of nāda.
Vede-tare vārtā — discussion about the Vedas or other things.When direct experience is reached, scholastic debates lose relevance.
Cetaś cetayati kva vā — where is the knowing mind?Devastating rhetorical question: In manonmanī there is no separate mind that can evaluate, compare or discuss.
The Bihar School interprets this as a reminder of the inherent limitation of verbal knowledge.The Vedas are maps;the practice of nāda is the territory.Once arrived, there are no more maps.
This verse expresses the characteristic attitude of haṭha yoga: pragmatic, experiential, impatient with theory that does not lead to practice.
