Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 29

सिद्धासनं सदाभ्यस्येद् युक्ताहारो यतिर्यमी | चत्वारिंशद्दिनं यावद् एकाकी तत्परायणः

siddhāsanaṃ sadābhyasyed yuktāhāro yatir yamī | catvāriṃśad dinaṃ yāvad ekākī tat-parāyaṇaḥ

The disciplined ascetic must always practice Siddhāsana with moderate diet, alone and dedicated, for forty days.

This verse prescribes a forty-day retreat dedicated to Siddhāsana. The conditions are specific:

  • Yuktāhāra — Moderate and appropriate diet. Neither excess nor deficiency; sāttvic foods that support practice.
  • Yati — An ascetic who has renounced. Indicates at least temporary renunciation of worldly activities.
  • Yamī — One who practices self-control, especially brahmacharya.
  • Ekākī — Alone, in solitude. Intensive practice requires isolation from social distractions.
  • Tat-parāyaṇa — Completely dedicated to it, with no other activities.

The period of forty days is significant across many spiritual traditions. It represents a complete cycle of transformation: sufficient time for the body’s energy patterns to reorganize and stabilize in a new configuration.

This type of intensive practice was common in the Nāth tradition and produces results that casual practice cannot match.
