Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 52
दक्षिणाञ्चितहस्तं च पृष्ठपार्श्वे निधाय च | वामेन पाणिना पादं धृत्वा व्यस्तं तु दक्षिणे
dakṣiṇāñcita-hastaṃ ca pṛṣṭha-pārśve nidhāya ca | vāmena pāṇinā pādaṃ dhṛtvā vyastaṃ tu dakṣiṇe
Place the right hand curved behind the back, and with the left hand hold the right foot that is crossed to the side.
This verse completes the description of Matsyendrāsana with the details of arm positioning:
- Right hand (dakṣiṇāñcita-hastam): Curves and is placed behind the back (pṛṣṭha-pārśve)
- Left hand (vāmena pāṇinā): Holds the right foot, passing the arm in front of or around the knee
This configuration creates a “lock” that deepens the twist and keeps it stable. The arm behind the back can eventually reach the opposite thigh or foot, creating a complete bandha.
Vyastam — “crossed” or “extended” — describes the position of the foot that has crossed over the opposite leg.
The complete twist acts upon the entire vertebral column, from the sacrum to the cervicals. Each vertebra receives a gentle rotation, maintaining flexibility and nourishing the intervertebral discs.
The posture must be practiced on both sides to maintain balance. After completing the right side, it is repeated to the left.
