Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 31

अथ महावेधः | महाबन्ध-स्थितो योगी कृत्वा पूरकमेककम् | वायूनां गतिमावृत्य निभृतं कण्ठ-मुद्रया

atha mahāvedhaḥ | mahābandha-sthito yogī kṛtvā pūrakam ekakam | vāyūnāṃ gatim āvṛtya nibhṛtaṃ kaṇṭha-mudrayā

Now Mahāvedha: The yogī established in Mahābandha, having made an inhalation, stops the movement of the airs firmly with the throat lock.

Atha mahāvedhaḥ — now Mahāvedha. This is the third member of the triad: Mahāmudrā, Mahābandha and Mahāvedha.Vedha means to pierce or pierce;the practice is designed to “pierce” the granthis and cause Kuṇḍalinī to ascend.

The base position is Mahābandha (mahābandha-sthitaḥ) already described. From this posture, pūrakam ekakam — a single deep inhalation — is performed.

Kaṇṭha-mudrayā nibhṛtam — firmly with the throat seal.Jālandhara Bandha is applied intensely, sealing the prāṇa in the torso. This preparatory retention creates the necessary pressure for the distinctive action of Mahāvedha that follows.
