Who truly knows the greatness of rāja yoga?Knowledge, liberation, stability and achievement are obtained through the word of the guru.

This verse emphasizes the esoteric nature of rāja yoga and the need for the guru:

Māhātmya — greatness, glory.Rāja yoga cannot be understood intellectually;must be experienced.

Ko vā jānāti tattvataḥ — “who really knows him?”A rhetorical question that points out the rarity of genuine understanding.Many speak of samādhi;few have done it.

The verse lists four fruits:

• Jñāna — direct knowledge, not merely intellectual
• Mukti — liberation from the cycle of suffering
• Sthiti — stability, permanent establishment
• Siddhi — achievement, powers and perfections

Guru-vākyena labhyate — “obtained by the word of the guru.”It is not enough to read texts or practice techniques;direct transmission is required from someone who has made the state.

The tantric tradition considers initiation (dīkṣā) and personal instruction essential.The guru not only teaches techniques but transmits the energy (śaktipāta) necessary for awakening.
