Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 5
महामुद्रा महाबन्धो महावेधश्च खेचरी | उड्डियानं मूलबन्धश्च बन्धो जालन्धराभिधः
mahāmudrā mahābandho mahāvedhaś ca khecarī | uḍḍiyānaṃ mūlabandhaś ca bandho jālandharābhidhaḥ
Mahāmudrā, Mahābandha, Mahāvedha, Khecarī, Uḍḍiyāna, Mūlabandha, and the bandha called Jālandhara…
This verse begins the enumeration of the main mudrās. The first seven:
-
Mahāmudrā — The “Great Seal.” Extended leg, heel at perineum, forward bend with bandhas.
-
Mahābandha — The “Great Lock.” The three bandhas simultaneously with crossed leg.
-
Mahāvedha — The “Great Piercing.” Striking the ground with the buttocks in mahābandha to force prāṇa into suṣumnā.
-
Khecarī — “Moving in space.” Tongue turned backward into the nasal cavity.
-
Uḍḍiyāna Bandha — “Flying upward.” Abdominal retraction and diaphragm elevation.
-
Mūla Bandha — “Root lock.” Contraction of the perineum.
-
Jālandhara Bandha — “Net lock.” Chin to chest, throat sealed.
The three bandhas (mūla, uḍḍiyāna, jālandhara) are fundamental and are used in combination with prāṇāyāma and the major mudrās.
