Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 47
अथ कुक्कुटासनम् | पद्मासनं समारूढः पादोपरि करौ क्षिपेत् | भूमौ संस्थाप्य हस्ताभ्यां व्योम्नि स्थानं कुक्कुटासनम्
atha kukkuṭāsanam | padmāsanaṃ samārūḍhaḥ pādopari karau kṣipet | bhūmau saṃsthāpya hastābhyāṃ vyomni sthānaṃ kukkuṭāsanam
Now, Kukkuṭāsana: seated in Padmāsana, insert the arms between the thighs and calves. With the hands placed on the ground, rise into space. This is Kukkuṭāsana.
Kukkuṭāsana, the “rooster posture,” is the first balance posture described in the text. It requires Padmāsana as a base, to which an elevation of the body on the hands is added.
The technique involves passing the arms through the spaces created by the crossed legs in lotus. This requires considerable hip flexibility and relatively thin arms or legs that are not too muscular.
Vyomni sthānam — “position in space” — indicates that the entire body rises from the floor, supported solely by the hands. The practitioner resembles a rooster perched on its legs.
This posture develops strength in the arms, wrists, and abdomen. It also intensifies the pressure on the perineum created by Padmāsana, increasing its energetic effects.
Kukkuṭāsana is preparatory for more advanced postures such as Garbhāsana (embryo posture).
