Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 38

अथ खेचरी | कपाल-कुहरे जिह्वा प्रविष्टा विपरीतगा | भ्रुवोरन्तर्गता दृष्टिर्मुद्रा भवति खेचरी

atha khecarī | kapāla-kuhare jihvā praviṣṭā viparītagā | bhruvor antargata dṛṣṭir mudrā bhavati khecarī

Now Khecarī: The tongue inserted backwards into the cavity of the skull, with the gaze fixed between the eyebrows — this is the Khecarī mudrā.

Atha khecarī — now Khecarī — introduces one of the most important and secret mudrās of Haṭha Yoga.Khecara means “moving in space” or “moving in the sky”;the practitioner transcends terrestrial limitations.

Kapāla-kuhare jihvā praviṣṭā viparītagā — the tongue inserted backwards into the cavity of the skull. The tongue is turned backwards (viparītagā) and inserted into the nasopharyngeal cavity, eventually reaching the space behind the uvula.

Bhruvor antargata dṛṣṭiḥ — the gaze fixed between the eyebrows.Śāmbhavī mudrā accompanies Khecarī: the eyes are directed towards the eyebrows (ājñā chakra). This combination of tongue and gaze seals consciousness in the higher centers.
