Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 93

स बिन्दुर्द्विविधः प्रोक्तः पाण्डुरो लोहितस्तथा | पाण्डुरं शुक्लमित्याहुः रक्तं राजस्तथा स्मृतम्

sa bindur dvividhaḥ proktaḥ pāṇḍuro lohitas tathā | pāṇḍuraṃ śuklam ity āhuḥ raktaṃ rājas tathā smṛtam

The bindu is said to be of two types: white and red.The white one is called śukla and the red one is known as rajas.

This verse introduces the tantric doctrine of dual bindu, fundamental to understanding the practices of Vajrolī and its variants.Dvividha bindu — bindu of two types — represents the masculine and feminine polarities of creative energy.

Pāṇḍura or śukla — white — is the male bindu, associated with Śiva, the moon, and pure consciousness.Physically it corresponds to semen;energetically, to the essence of consciousness.

Lohita or rakta — red — also called rajas, is the feminine bindu, associated with Śakti, the sun, and creative energy.Physically it corresponds to menstrual fluid or female secretions;energetically, to the manifesting vital force.

In the individual body, regardless of biological sex, both bindus are present. The white bindu resides in the region of the moon (bindu visarga, at the back of the skull) while the red bindu resides in the region of the sun (maṇipūra). The union of the two—whether literal in tantric practices with a partner, or subtle through prāṇāyāma and visualization—is the goal of yoga.
