Caturthopadeśaḥ (Samādhi) · Verse 14
सुषुम्णा-वाहिनी प्राणे शून्ये विशति मानसे | तदा सर्वाणि कर्माणि निर्मूलयति योगवित्
suṣumnā-vāhinī prāṇe śūnye viśati mānase | tadā sarvāṇi karmāṇi nirmūlayati yogavit
When prāṇa flows through suṣumnā and the mind enters emptiness, then the knower of yoga eradicates all karmas.
This verse details the mechanism of karmic release:
Suṣumnā-vāhinī prāṇe — when prāṇa flows through suṣumnā.Normally, the energy alternates between iḍā (left, lunar) and piṅgalā (right, solar).Only in exceptional moments does it enter the central channel.
Śūnye viśati mānase — the mind enters emptiness. When prāṇa flows through suṣumnā, the mind automatically becomes still. The prāṇa-mind correlation is fundamental in haṭha yoga.
Sarvāṇi karmāṇi nirmūlayati — eradicates (nirmūlayati, literally “uproots”) all karmas. The three types of karma:
- Sañcita — accumulated from past lives
- Prārabdha — who bears fruit in this life
- Āgāmī — which is generated by present actions
Yogavit — the yoga connoisseur. It is not enough to practice; You have to understand the process.
The Bihar School explains that the destruction of karma is not selective but total. In the emptiness of suṣumnā, stored impressions (saṃskāras) lose their power to generate results.Without seeds, there are no fruits.
