Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 7
महामुद्रां नभो-मुद्रां उड्डीयाणं जलन्धरम् | मूल-बन्धं च यो वेत्ति स योगी मुक्ति-भाजनम्
mahāmudrāṃ nabho-mudrāṃ uḍḍīyāṇaṃ jalandharam | mūla-bandhaṃ ca yo vetti sa yogī mukti-bhājanam
Whoever knows Mahāmudrā, Nabhomudrā, Uḍḍīyāna, Jālandhara, and Mūla Bandha — that yogī is worthy of liberation.
This verse enumerates five essential Haṭha Yoga practices. Mahāmudrā — the great seal — combines āsana, prāṇāyāma, and bandhas. Nabhomudrā — the seal of the sky — involves directing the tongue toward the palate and consciousness toward space.
The three bandhas mentioned — Uḍḍīyāna (abdominal lift), Jālandhara (throat lock), and Mūla Bandha (root lock) — are the fundamental energy locks applied during prāṇāyāma and meditation.
Mukti-bhājanam — worthy of liberation. The knowledge here is not merely intellectual but practical and experiential. These techniques, when mastered, lead to liberation (mukti) from the cycle of rebirth.
