Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 24
अथ महाबन्धः | पार्ष्णिं वामस्य पादस्य योनि-स्थाने नियोजयेत् | वाम-ओरूपरि संस्थाप्य दक्षिणं चरणं तथा
atha mahābandhaḥ | pārṣṇiṃ vāmasya pādasya yoni-sthāne niyojayet | vāma-orūpari saṃsthāpya dakṣiṇaṃ caraṇaṃ tathā
Now Mahābandha: The heel of the left foot is placed on the perineum and the right foot is placed on the left thigh.
With atha mahābandhaḥ the description of the second great seal begins. The base position is similar to Siddhāsana: the left heel presses yoni-sthāna (the perineum), directly stimulating Mūlādhāra chakra.
The right foot is placed on the left thigh, establishing a stable sitting posture. This leg configuration allows the pelvis to remain rooted while the bandhas are applied.
Unlike Mahāmudrā (which uses an extended leg), Mahābandha employs a closed symmetrical posture. This intensifies the pressure at the base of the spine and concentrates more energy on the three closing points: perineum, abdomen and throat.
