Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 27

हिक्का श्वासश्च कासश्च शिरःकर्णाक्षिवेदनाः | भवन्ति विविधाः रोगाः पवनस्य प्रकोपतः

hikkā śvāsaś ca kāsaś ca śiraḥkarṇākṣivedanāḥ | bhavanti vividhāḥ rogāḥ pavanasya prakopataḥ

Hiccup, asthma, cough, headaches, ear and eye pain — various diseases arise from the disturbance of prāṇa.

This verse enumerates specific symptoms that can arise when prāṇa is disturbed (prakopataḥ) by incorrect practice. The list includes: hiccup (hikkā), asthma (śvāsa), cough (kāsa), and pain (vedanā) in the head (śiras), ears (karṇa), and eyes (akṣi).

These afflictions reflect the imbalance of vāyu (air) according to the āyurvedic system. Disturbed prāṇa manifests first in organs related to respiration and the head, where the prāṇic channels are most sensitive.

Practitioners must be attentive to these symptoms as warning signs. If they appear, practice should be reduced or temporarily suspended, and an experienced teacher should be consulted. Ignoring these signals can lead to more serious conditions. The tradition emphasizes that it is better to practice less and correctly than much and incorrectly.
