Prathamopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 43

पार्ष्णिभ्यां वृषणस्याधो पार्श्वपादौ च संस्थितौ | भद्रासनं भवेदेतद्व्याधिहारि महोदयम्

pārṣṇibhyāṃ vṛṣaṇasyādho pārśva-pādau ca saṃsthitau | bhadrāsanaṃ bhaved etad vyādhi-hāri mahodayam

With the heels beneath the scrotum and the feet well placed at the sides, this is Bhadrāsana, which destroys diseases and brings great prosperity.

This verse completes the description of Bhadrāsana and enumerates its benefits:

Vyādhi-hāri — “destroys diseases.” The posture has therapeutic effects, particularly for ailments of the urogenital and reproductive system. The gentle pressure on the perineum stimulates circulation in this frequently stagnant area.

Mahodaya — “great elevation” or “great prosperity.” This term can be interpreted on multiple levels:

  • Physical: Improves overall health and vitality
  • Energetic: Raises prāṇa from the lower centers
  • Spiritual: Leads toward elevated states of consciousness

With Bhadrāsana, the four principal postures mentioned in verse 21 are complete. These four — Siddhāsana, Padmāsana, Siṃhāsana, and Bhadrāsana — constitute the core of the classical Haṭha Yoga āsana system. The additional postures that follow are complementary, not essential.

Note that all are seated meditation postures, not dynamic or acrobatic ones.
