Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 57
नाडीजलोदरधातुगतदोषविनाशनम् | गच्छता तिष्ठता कार्यमुज्जाय्याख्यं तु कुम्भकम्
nāḍījalodaradhātugatadoṣavināśanam | gacchatā tiṣṭhatā kāryam ujjāyyākhyaṃ tu kumbhakam
It destroys doṣas in the nāḍīs, dropsy, and in the tissues. This kumbhaka called ujjāyī can be practiced while walking or standing.
This verse expands the benefits of ujjāyī and offers an important practical instruction. Nāḍīgatadoṣa (doṣas in the nāḍīs), jalodara (dropsy/fluid retention), and dhātugatadoṣa (impurities in the seven bodily tissues) are all eliminated.
The most notable statement is that ujjāyī can be practiced gacchatā (walking) or tiṣṭhatā (standing). This distinguishes it from other prāṇāyāmas that require a seated posture. The versatility of ujjāyī allows integrating the practice into daily activities.
Modern vinyāsa yoga practitioners use ujjāyī continuously during āsana sequences. This application, though not explicitly described in classical texts, is consistent with the spirit of this verse. The ujjāyī breath transforms any physical activity into a spiritual practice.
